The Clinician

Alice HasenPhoto by Austin Britt

Alice Hasen joined the Amro family in 2017 as a Band and Orchestra Specialist. She came to us with three years of band directing experience from Coahoma County High School in Clarksdale, MS. Alice enjoys helping young players find their first instruments and matching developing musicians to the perfect fit for the next step in their musical journey. When Alice isn’t working at Amro, she develops her skills as a professional violinist/fiddler, focusing on rock, folk, roots, jazz, and classical music. She is the leader of Alice Hasen and the Blaze, a fiddle-powered groove band that primarily plays her original compositions.  Alice is also a member of the Blackwater Trio, an acoustic rock group that performs both covers and originals. Outside of these acts, Alice collaborates with several singer-songwriters, bands and recording artists in the South. Her playing covers all genres, but her favorites are rock, funk, and gypsy jazz. The Clinics

teaching string class

Educational clinics are a fantastic way to hone your skills as a musician or to learn a new skill for the first time. If you’d like to register for the clinics, click here. We are providing two different clinics this year, one for beginners and the other for intermediate and advanced players. These sessions will be held in the Recital Hall at Amro Music on Saturday, March 2, 2019.

The first session starts at 11:00 AM. Alice will teach “Star of the County Down,” “Old Joe Clark,” and “Red Haired Boy” to beginner fiddlers looking to add to their repertoire. Once the tunes are learned, the participants will discuss how to embellish them with simple fiddle techniques. The backing band, Mulberry Jam, will be present to help fiddlers jam and bring these tunes to life! No prior knowledge of the fiddle is required, but students will be asked to sight-read or to learn the tune by ear. You can download the PDFs for the three tunes you will need here.

The second session is a Masterclass Workshop, which will run from 1:00 PM – 2:15 PM. Five intermediate/advanced fiddlers will be selected to perform a fiddle tune of their choice. Participants will begin by performing their tune with the backing band. Alice will listen and provide feedback to each player in a fifteen-minute “mini-lesson” that will culminate in another performance of the tune incorporating Alice’s suggestions. Even though only five fiddlers will be able to participate in the class, musicians of all levels and ages are welcome to attend as audience members. If you’re interested in being one of the performers for this clinic, please email our event coordinator, Maigan Smith. Please attach a copy of your music to the email.
