Music majors are 90% more bulletproof than biochemistry majors.
Or so we claimed in 2013. No one believed it then, and we suspect no one is going to be gullible enough in 2014 to believe it, either. Still, music majors are more likely to be accepted into med school than biochemistry majors; that hasn’t changed. It was with that little detail that we introduced Doctors in Concert, first in what we hope will become a long series of benefit concerts in the future. Turns out, a lot of brilliant doctors are also brilliant musicians (or vice versa?), and we were immensely grateful to the talented physicians who performed—as was the demonstrative audience! Thanks to everyone’s generosity, we sold out the Buckman and passed on the results to St. Jude.
Back in the store, we had our second annual Strings for Cans event to benefit the Mid-South Food Bank. While we had the benefit of experience behind us, it turns out that no amount of experience can conquer icy roads! Then again, whimsical weather is the fun part of global warming, right? And, even with a smaller turn-out this year, we were able to turn strings into almost a thousand pounds of food with the help of our generous partners at D’Addario Strings.
This year we inducted the first three members of our Music Educator Walk of Fame. The Amro Music Educator Walk of Fame recognizes music educators who have had a powerful and exemplary impact on Mid-South music students; names of those elected to the Walk of Fame are engraved in the bricks at the entrance to Amro. Our first "class" of inductees was made up of Dr. David Willson, Dr. J.D. Kelly, and Jim Holcomb, and we look forward to inducting a new class soon!
Amro itself got some nice shout-outs, with our third Top 100 Music Dealer award from NAMM and first Top 50 Workplaces in Memphis award from The Commercial Appeal. We were also named to the Memphis Flyer's Best of Memphis list again-- always a thrill.
Oh! If you’ll look to the top, right, bottom, and left of the screen, you’ll see one of our other big accomplishments this past year: the redesign of our website in January. Speak! Creative, a Cordova-based site-design team, has been our partner for the past few years, and they’ve done another terrific job glamming us up. Hopefully you like the site as well as we do!
We have big plans for 2014 as well. This year marks 50 years we’ve been a Steinway & Sons dealer. We’re privileged each and every day to sell the finest pianos in the world. Not everyone gets to offer their customers the pianos used by 97% of concert soloists (How about Harry Connick, Jr., Billy Joel, and Lang Lang for a start?), so we’ve got some big celebrations in store to mark half a century together.
In fact, Amro is so thrilled about everything that's coming up that we're kicking off this blog to keep customers updated. We're also going to offer some great information from our experts, with everything from tips on buying a piano to making your first sounds on a clarinet.
