Staying Motivated to Practice During the Summer

With summer right around the corner, you might be thinking it's time for you to sit back, relax, and put off practicing until the fall, right?

The Northwest Evaluation Association published an article showing that students who have just completed seventh grade "lose on average 36 percent of their school-year gains in reading and a whopping 50 percent of their school-year gains in math. In other words, summer learning loss increases with age through elementary and middle school – a troubling trend that should be examined further.

According to a blog published on Oxford University Press's Academic Insights for the Thinking World, "it can be hard to persuade youngsters to continue to practice their instruments without the motivation of lesson preparation or a school ensemble rehearsal. If there isn’t a certain amount of vacation practicing, however, some of the musical gains children made during the school year may begin to melt away."

Just like reading over the summer is important, practicing your instrument is important too. During the summer months, students can lose valuable progress made during the school year. But how can you stay motivated to practice when there are so many other fun things to do?

One of the ways that students can be motivated during the summer is through fun music. Here at Amro, we have nearly 50,000 different sheet music selections! These pieces are for virtually every instrument and voice type, and range from pop and broadway to classical and jazz. Stop by the store and talk to Joel, our resident sheet music expert, to find your favorite songs for the summer!

Another way to stay motived to practice during the summer is to attend live performances. In our last blog, we covered the rich musical history of Memphis and how Amro played a part in that history. The music-making didn't stop in the past though. Live music continues to thrive here in Memphis today. One of the best places to see incredible live music performances is our very own Orpheum Theatre. The Orpheum Theatre is  bringing two highly popular shows to Memphis this summer:  Anastasia and Hamilton. Click on the title to get more information on these shows (for which we also have the sheet music!)

If you haven't already filled your summer schedule to the brim, you should check out some of the incredible local music camps going on this summer. Click on any of the links below to get more information on how to sign up for these events. Participating in a camp or workshop is a great way to sharpen your music skills and sustain the progress you made during the school year.

So, now you have a plan for the best summer ever! Grab your tickets for a local performance. Then, stop by Amro and pick out your favorite music so you can learn the songs ahead of time. Broadway isn't your thing? No sweat! We have titles in virtually every genre for almost every instrument. We'll also have all the music, accessories, and supplies you'll need if you decide to attend a music camp this summer.

Whatever you decide to do this summer, we hope you have a great one!
