All of the Music to Me Entries

Amy's Hands

This is a picture of hands that express the emotions of
the soul thru music. Sixteen years ago, they were small little fingers that were directed to middle C. Now they
are the graceful technically adept hands of a young woman. These are AMY’S HANDS.
I began to teach Amy piano before kindergarten, sitting thru each practice session to show my support. There was a special jar filled with paper scraps for her to draw from at the end of each week after practicing “with no grumblings.” The small pieces of paper would list things like, “Amy gets to go to bed ½ hour later on Friday night,” or “Amy gets to choose bubblegum flavored toothpaste next time.” She began to blossom and excel.
Now Amy is a senior “ scholarship” music major at Union University in Jackson, preparing a 30 minute memorized “ senior recital” of Debussey, Mozart etc. I could listen to her for hours and this mother is humbled and proud.

A Little Blind Girl Taught Me To See
It was with great trepidation that I opened the front door of my house that day in 2006. What on earth was I thinking! I didn't know anything about teaching music to someone who was blind! But there she stood, the most beautiful little six-year old little girl. Her name was Caia. I took her hand and led her and her mother into my home. I was so nervous, but not little Caia. She immediately spoke up saying, "Hello, I understand that you are going to teach me to play the piano. I hope you also teach me to sing, for I love to sing."
After nine months of study, I presented Caia in my group music recital at Beth Sholom Synagogue, She accompanied herself on the piano as she sang, and then I played for her to sing. Many in the audience wept.
All I can say is that I am still understanding what it means to work with someone like Caia who has taught me to see with my ears and heart and mind. What complete joy there is in seeing persons such as Caia learn and develop musically as well as a total person. Also, as Caia learns, I too continue to learn and look and hear and feel music a little differently because of the influence on my life of this small wise person. I have become the blind person who has learned to use her other senses, not just sight and hearing and feeling; but love and understanding and patience; while Caia has become the sighted person who has taught me how to really begin to see. What a journey I am having.

Music Comes from the Heart
My picture shows me with the 18 Trophies I have won in piano competitions. I love to look at my trophies because it makes me feel proud for all my hard work. Even sometimes, my B-Ma makes me practice when I don't want to. But it is very worth it.
When my dog, Ella, died, I didn't think I wanted to play piano that day, but then I did, and I wasn't so sad anymore.
When I play piano, it makes me feel happy and warm inside. Sometimes though when my B-Ma helps me with all the dynamics, phrasing, and details, I get frustrated. But when I play in front of an audience, I hear how beautiful the music is. It even sometimes makes me cry because it is so beautiful.
My B-Ma taught me that beautiful music comes from my heart and not just from learning the notes. So I have to be a good girl with a good heart so I can play good music.
When I was six, I played the piano in Atlanta at the World Piano Conference and got a standing ovation. When all those people stood up and clapped, I knew that I wanted to play the piano for the rest of my life and not to be shy anymore.

My Haven from Loneliness
This picture that has been done by me, Terrance Blackman, conveys how music is my haven from the bitterness of loneliness.
When I hear or play music, it is as if all of my senses except for hearing fizzle away and I know I'm in a safe place. Everything else loses its importance and for a few moments, nothing outside music exists in my mind.
Music is something I can touch, not with my hands, but with my soul. It is my shield from all of the pain I could be feeling.

Special Place for my Family

My earliest memories of music around my childhood home were of my mother singing along with vinyl LP's on our record player . To this day she still sings with the voice of an angel in her church choir .
Secrets" which to this day I ask her to play for me when she is home. Through many years of practicing and playing the piano , flute and now the harp , I always enjoy hearing my daughters play something for me . This is a picture of Jennifer practicing on a harp borrowed from a very special person who is a concert harpist here locally.
Music will always have a special place in the lives of my family.

Incredible Power of Music

This picture represents the essence of what music means to me. The joy of discovery. The beauty and purity of music. The search into the unknown and infinite mystery of the universe. All of this is captured in this one moment. I was performing in Belgium and after the concert this little child walked up to the piano and started playing it. It was a moment of awe and magic. The discovery by this little boy of the incredible power of music in the sound of the piano.

True Peace

Music has always been about self expression and creativity, but I also associate that with the bond of a band. Through the many tribulations and heartache, there are just as many moments of laughter, care and hard work that make the end performance worth all the time. Marching band season is the time of blood, sweat and tears; It is the time of bringing many individual musicians together to create a larger, more dynamic piece with visuals and sound.
Music is our expression of unity and in the dynamics of the song we show ourselves individually. This is true power. This is true peace.

Sharing Music with Sister

To me, music is a gift that can touch anyone and everyone. Being able to share this gift with my sister is an honor. Seeing her tackle a difficult piece allows me to feel what music really is. The feeling of accomplishment from hard work and perseverance is the feeling above all others.

Fulfillment of Pride

To me, music means a score, point, or goal in which I am proud to stand up and say that I have accomplished a fulfillment of pride in me.

Expression of Worship

Music is very important to me. Music is my way of expressing my love for God and giving him the worship he deserves. It also serves as a way for me to be by myself and enjoy my free time. One day I hope that I can use my music to touch someone else’s life.

Too Much Practice

This is a picture of me when I passed out and went to sleep from practicing all day and all night. This photo shows how big of a role my music is in my life. This picture also shows how much time and effort I put in my music. Finally this photo shows how important my music is to me. I am using my time practicing rather than playing the game.

Constructive Talent

Music plays a major part in my life because playing, and creating music makes me enthusiastic. Having such a wonderful inspiring as well as constructive talent in my life has been a great experience for me. Music has given me something to strive and look forward to completing. After my recital in the 3rd grade I was overjoyed to see my family watching me work toward something I enjoy so much. Music has become the most aspiring thing in my life.

Different Aspects of Music

This collage of pictures defines what music means to me. Just as there are many different aspects in this picture, there are many different aspects in music. Music brings everyone together, just like I have demonstrated in this picture. Music doesn’t care about what color you are, where you are from, or about the people you hangout with. Music is just pleasing to the soul and ears and everyone can relate to it. Music can also be played and heard in many different ways as I have shown in this picture. No matter how you like to enjoy it, everyone loves it in his or her own way. Music is special to me and if there was no music in this world I don’t know what I would do. Music brings out people’s emotions from inside. Last, my picture shows those who make music. These people help to bring us music so that everyone can enjoy it. Music brings the world together in perfect harmony. Without music, there will be nothing to dance to, sing to, listen to, or no reason to use musical instruments. So, what do I think that music means? Music means diversity, music is joy, music is power, music is inspirational, music is love, music shows different cultures, music is meaningful, and music brings everyone together. This is what music means to me.

The Power of Music

The power of music awakens my mind everyday and allows me to face challenges head-on instead of running away. When I first touched my violin, I instantly knew that it would be my destiny to play and enjoy its sounds.
I began playing when I was only a mere four years old, and now I am twelve. Through these years, the sound of music never seemed even a bit boring. Everyday, I play and listen. Everyday, I enjoy every moment.

Bored without Music

What music means to me is that without music, I think the world would be boring. It would be boring because music is uplifting; it has rhythm and beats different sounds, and sometimes gives people a boost. Music is helpful to people when they are sad or going through trouble. A world without music is something you can’t describe. All I know, if there wasn’t any music, I don’t know what I will do.

Anything I Set My Mind To

You ask what music means to me. I was in the 6th grade when I first learned how to play the violin. I felt superior when my mom and other family members came to watch me perform. The picture provided was taken the day of my first performance. After my first performance I felt like I could do anything I set my mind to. Music lets me express myself by playing the violin. When I grow up, I want to get a scholarship in music for college. This is why music means so much to me.

Sounds of Emotion

Sounds are sometimes like an angel singing or birds tweeting when you wake up in the morning. Sounds can be very emotional depending on what you are playing or listening to. Music can make you laugh, because of some of the playful weird sounds. Music has an effect on emotions. Music can be happy, sad, and funny. I enjoy music a lot, because I come from a musical family. It’s in my heart. I think music is one of the greatest gifts I could have, because it expresses how I feel about certain things.

Friends and Family

Music means a lot to me. Without music I would not be the person that I am today. The joy of music is shared by my friends and family. We can all appreciate each other’s talents, and openly express ourselves through music. When I am playing my cello, I feel as though I am walking on clouds. Music to me is more than a bunch of notes, it is soothing and uplifting. Music has been in my life since I was a little boy. I’ve been instructed in music since I was in the 2nd grade. I will love music forever. Everywhere I go I hear music.

Emotions

Music is the one thing that I am going to stick with for a long, very long time. I really enjoy the thought that someone so smart came up with the idea to make instruments so that we can play for a living if we please. Music is so amazing in my life because I have so many different choices of music I can listen to and play. There is sad, angry, happy, exciting, scary, and a lot of other emotions in the world of music. There is a lot of different types of emotions that I have and there is always a certain song that I can listen to or play on my violin that can match my emotion. A lot of times when I’m doing my homework I listen to the radio and when I go to bed I listen to a Japanese girl play the piano and/or an American girl play the violin. I have both of those women on a CD and I think they are amazing! So in my point of view this is my true statement about WHAT MUSIC MEANS TO ME! I LOVE ANYTHING THAT HAS TO DO WITH MUSIC.

Sense of Comfort

Music to me means a sense of comfort when you are sad, a nice friend when you’re bored, and a good rhythm to dance to. It also gives me a way to express myself. I started dance classes at the age of 2 and ½. The music of a routine whether it’s jazz, ballet or tap, gets me energized. Music makes me happy and sometimes I imagine being in another place or in a different time. When I’m sad or upset, I play a song on my keyboard or viola and I start to smile. It’s great hearing the different sounds each key on the keyboard or string on the viola makes. Or I even put in a CD and escape with the music. Being the only child, music keeps me from feeling lonely. I think if every child receives music lessons of some kind, he will be a well-rounded, confident person.

I Love Music

I love music. It is very important and means so much to me. I am going to stick with music my whole life. I am going to get a scholarship for playing the violin and I am going to go to college. Everyone that I know listens to music. I played the violin for my family and they love listening to me and they encourage me to play more. I love playing the violin and I’m so glad that I started playing in the fifth grade. Mrs. Turner helps me sooo much and she also encourages me. I also played the piano and it was a great experience. I play that for two years. I am so happy that somebody had the idea to make music. I love it so much. I listen to it every day. I play it every day, too.
I LOVE MUSIC!!!

Music Reaches the Heart

I learned how to use my music as an instrument of peace. Music is healing and I think it comes from above. Sometimes when I am listening or playing music of all kinds, I feel I can express myself so easy. I think that music is a way of helping others. My mom has always said, “Sometimes music is one of the only things that can help heal someone’s heart.” Sometimes when I’m angry about something, playing my instrument calms me down. I also believe that music is a part of our souls, because some music has cool chords and harmonies, and I get to feeling all nice inside. I guess those are the benefits of having a musical family, who loves music. Music is just inside of me, and will always be. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to share how I feel about music from the heart.

Music is Everything

When you play an instrument, you usually learn a little bit about music. Let’s face it, we don’t know what music really is. Well, to me, music is everything. Everything is music. Music is the sound your feet make when you walk. It’s the rhythm your words have when you talk. It’s the “ding” you hear when cookies are done. Music is in everyone. Music is the sound in the spring, and everything in between. You see that poem I just made? That was music. In my photo, you saw me lying down by a radio, listening to music. That is very important to me. Music is very important to me. It truly means a lot to me. I LOVE MUSIC.

Show the World

When I think of music it turns my world around. It can show the world what I can do. It can give me a better future and it can help me help others. Through my music everyone in the world can benefit. It can inspire the world to become more interested in music. Although it may bore people it helps other people determine what they are going to do in life.

Inspire My Thoughts

The role of music in my life is in the form of reading and expression. When I play my CDs or my violin, I always read the music to help inspire my thoughts and to get the feel of what the music is all about. For example, when I am in orchestra class, I have to read the music in order to play a specific piece. While reading, I try to think about what the artist is trying to say in his lyrics to inspire me. In this picture, I am playing “Yankee Doodle,” which is a musical piece describing a variation of the Spirit of America. I am able to view myself as an American citizen who can be free to be expressive about all types of music and learn to appreciate the music as an art form.

Sun Setting on a Peaceful Day

Music to me is like the sun setting on a nice peaceful day. Music calms my soul and helps me to relax. When I am feeling sad, I turn to music to bring me joy. My day starts and ends to music. Music is the backbone to my soul.

Focus

Music is a big part of my life. I have been interested in music since I was in elementary school. It helps me focus on school work and in the musical arts. It helps me have more responsibility in my life because it pushes me to be more responsible for practicing every day to get better so I could do well in the future.

Relaxed and Calm

This is a picture of me at John P. Freeman. I was at a recital in the 4th grade playing the violin. This is the first year I started playing a strings instrument.
Now I’m the 6th grade and I play the cello. Playing an instrument gets me relaxed and calm. I play the cello as an extra activity. I am so happy I decided to play in the orchestra.

Another Language

What music means to me is so much and very important. It’s a way that I can express my thoughts and feelings. It’s just like reading another language that you could understand. Every time I play the violin I feel that if I try my best I could be someone in the world.

Music Poem

Without music I can’t rest
Nor can I do my very best,
I’m just as happy as can be,
Music means a lot to me, can’t you see?
What’s my squeeze? It’s the same!
Music! Don’t you recognize my game?
Music is love for me to hear.
Music is how I face my fear.
Music is like a lovable breeze,
It keeps you warm so you don’t freeze
Music is very, very nice
A wise man would give you that advice
Music is my main squeeze! Oh yes!
It keeps me happy and free from depress
To me music is nothing wrong,
Just my heart it brings along.

Open Your Mind

This is a picture of me when at a recital in the fourth grade. It was taken at John P. Freeman. It shows what music means to me. Music to me is a great way to open your mind or clear your thoughts. Music is different sounds that are combined to make a song. I play the violin. The violin is a great instrument to play. It really does help me relax in all ways. To me music is like a helper. It helps me concentrate also. Some people love music, but the question is, do they know what it means to them.

Rhythm and Beat

Music means a great deal to me. It makes me happy when I hear the sound of music. The rhythm and beat makes me sing out loud and sometimes spin in circles or dance. I love music so much that I listen to it everyday. When I feel sad and blue I just play my favorite music and my blues go away. I am so glad that I can make music by playing my violin.

Music is Elegant

Music is elegant, using tones and instruments that are musical. What music means to me, in my opinion, is expressing yourself. Ways of expressing yourself could be towards a situation, or expressing your mood. Music also can reach out to someone that is feeling down; it can brighten someone’s day. When I pick up my instrument, the violin, and begin to play it, I feel having a wonderful day musically. This is what music means to me—reaching out to someone, making them feel wonderful with the elegant sound of tones and instruments.

A Better Place

This is a picture of me practicing my viola. Music is important to me because it makes the world a better place. Without music I would be bored all the time.

Letting Myself Go

This picture shows me holding the instrument I play; it is the double bass. It was before our Christmas Concert. Music is like my life; I listen to music, play music, and even sing music. Music is a way of letting my self go. Music is also a way of being free. When I’m upset, I just think of a song or a tune that I know real well. When I think of the tune I have nothing but good thoughts in my mind. Music means a lot to me.

My First Violin

This is a picture of my violin in its case. This violin is the first one I have had and I am still playing it. This violin is special to me because I have played at a lot of recitals with it and my friends and I played them together. This violin is also special to me because one day I will look back at it and see how far I have come. To me music is a challenge in my life that could reflect upon my future.

Tranquility

Without music, I wouldn’t be relaxed. I need music in some type of form or fashion, whether it is a radio, my violin, or even my I pod to keep me going or in most cases, keep me well rested. Music is the key to help me feel the tranquility represented when I get relaxed. It is the Yang to my anti-calm Ying. I probably couldn’t be as laid back and nice as I am at school without my wonderful music to keep me peaceful.

Comfort

The reason I love music is because I have always been around it my whole life. Ever since I was three, I don’t know why, I always seen myself playing an instrument. Instruments aren’t the only things that I enjoy that are a part of the music I like to listen or make with. I mostly like making music with other people. Like in this picture, I’m playing with my middle school orchestra for our National Junior Honor Society program. Music has always been important to me. When I have different things going on in my life I listen to music that expresses how I feel. Music is a comfort to me and it has always helped me through my life, it’s influenced my life, and I can also use music to make others feel better no matter how happy or bad I feel.

My Life

This is a picture of my beloved cello and I. When I have my cello in hand, I become completely relaxed and perfectly content. Every time I pull my treasured cello from its case, my heart and mind finally go to that serene state that only the sight and sound of music can accomplish. Music is not an escape from my life, it is my life. I wake in the morning with music playing in my head and return to sleep with it like a mother's precious lullabye. However, music is not just seeing and hearing, above all else it is feeling. I'm referring to the type of feeling that grants a child hope and extracts the strongest emotions out of a person. Music is my companion when I'm lonely, my voice when I cannot speak, my express ticket to anyplace and time, my cherished gift grom God, my life!

Thankful
For over 20 years I have been teaching music and enjoying sharing the love that I have for music with others. There aren't enough words to desribe the joy that I feel when I hear my students excel at a piece that they have been working on. I am so thankful for being able to share this with so many.

History and Legacy

I took this picture last summer during the Turner Picnic in Gravel Springs Mississippi., of Sharde (Thomas) Turner and The Rising Star Fife and Drum Band.
One has to ask, How did drum and fife music find it's way to the delta? Are the roots as far as Northern and Western Africa, or even Britain.? Could it be thousands of years old? If you think about music as an oral and cultural tradition how did this music stay alive so long and travel so far? Or like Jazz is it one of America's true
classical music forms?
What's very sad and alarming to me, is that we have lost Otha Turner, along with R.L Burnside, Jessie Mae Hemphill and Junior Kimbrough, practitioners of hill country blues. Otha died about five years ago at 94, and was possibly the only african american cane fife players in a vanishing musical tradition. However, Sharde, his gradaughter is keeping the history and his legacy alive.
Sadly languages die, traditions become extinct, music programs get cut from school budgets....
Along with the Evans', the Thomas' and the Burnside brothers, (the families and relatives that have kept the Turner picnic going for fifty years)...and Sharde Turner. My faith was restored a little this summer, and this picture reminds me of how transforming hearing the live experience can be. Keep the blues alive.

A Healing Music

From the beginning to more than a year of my life I have been a colicky baby. So you can just imagine the uncomfortable feeling that I have. Not to mention the frustration and stress to my parents.
My grandparents suggested soothing music to help me fall asleep. This helped me forget all my pain and troubles. I have not stopped listening to music since that day.
I became interested in playing the violin at three years old and the piano two years later.
Music always makes me feel cheery and happy all over just like Christmas time.

Beautiful Life

This is a photo of a 14 year old violinist from Holdenville, OK. She has been studying the violin for over 4 years. She fell in love with the instrument after her older cousin, and photographer of this photo, started pursuing a professional career as a fiddle player and private teacher. Katy's talent is very versatile and is completely raw. Her training with her cousin has changed her life in many ways. Katy comes from an athletic family and music isn't a big deal when it comes to activities. She has decided to take a different turn in her life and pursue something different. She has struggled with overcoming some anxiety and nerve issues while studying the violin. She now confidently performs in various events and concerts and holds her head high with the confidence that music has given her. She is an inspiration to those who are afraid to go against the grain and step out of their box. She is an active music student that is working hard to learn everything she can. She now has plans of starting her own private teaching studio after high school. With this story, it proves that music can shape your life to it's most beautiful result.

Two Front Teeth

My Dad inspires me to play the piano. By playing the piano, we connect to all our families on the East and West coast. Whenever I perfect a piece, my Dad records and sends it to all of our relatives.
Through music, I communicate with all our families. I love to hear from my relatives on how I made there day. The one thing that I like the most is that I can make my tired Daddy relax when I am playing.
Music makes me smile without being aware that my front teeth are missing.

Musical Hands

At one year old, my son is already full of the same wonder and fascination with music that I had as a boy. At the center of that wonder and fascination are the hands of my father - his grandfather - passing his love of music to our youngest generation one note and one chipped key at a time.

I Am Music

I can’t remember when music wasn’t in my life. It has always been around me. I love to sing! I sang at my aunt’s wedding in 2004, in front of 198 people. I met the band Bowling for Soup for
the first time when I was nine years old, and started playing guitar after that. Last year, I got to spend time with the guitar player from Bowling for Soup for an hour and he showed me how to play one of
their songs! In sixth grade I started playing tenor saxophone. I also started voice lessons last year.
Between singing and playing, music is my top priority. I listen to it, I breathe it, I feel it. I am music.

Kash Violin

I am happy to be doing new experiences in music. In this picture, I wanted to show that I love playing violin. I love playing violin because I learn more about the past and history. It is a very fun instrument to play with, and I get to meet new people, like teachers, during the years I learn violin.
"Wake up, let's go play!" I am astonished that I get to use this invocation most mornings with my youngest son. For me, music provides the context for daily practical parenting seminars. While we play violin, we practice getting along, patience, and loving one another.

Music Calls Me Back
Music will never mean anything less than everything to me. Music is my first language from the day I learned my first alphabet letters from "A" to "G". Words will never quite describe the feeling that swells inside of me when I hear the birds sing every morning. Music is my mentor. When I play music, I learn patience and perseverance. I think music will always make me feel happy. As my friends go away, music calls them back to me. What is merrier than the feeling of coming back to your friend, or the house you grew up in? Only music can bring me to a place, like in this picture, where the breeze is everlasting, and the grass is greener then ever beneath me as I am lying down under a blue sky with the sun beaming upon me. Every time I practice my music, I am brought to a different world for 2 or 3 minutes. With the world in chaos, music whispers hope to me and tells me the disaster will soon pass. The chaos is only a climax in music, so everything will be all right soon. After these words, my playing expresses the rest of what music means to me.
