So what is a digital piano? Is it a keyboard or a piano?
A digital piano plays and sounds similar to an acoustic piano. The primary difference is that the sound is generated electronically instead of with felt hammers, strings, and a soundboard .
A wide range of digital pianos are sold today from toys to serious musical instruments. A digital piano can be suitable for learning to play piano if it meets certain minimum requirements.
In order to be suitable for learning the piano, the digital keyboard must have:
- the full 88 keys;
- keys with real piano touch (not spring-loaded switches);
- operating piano-style pedals;
- a stable base that places the keyboard at the correct height.
Most electronic keyboards, especially those advertised on TV and sold in department stores, are keyboards and not pianos. They don't have the essential features above and consequently, aren't suitable for learning to play the piano.
