How to Find a Piano Teacher
Choosing the perfect piano teacher may seem like a daunting task. After all, the success of you and your child's musical journey is dependent upon them. Here are some suggestions on finding the right piano teacher for you or your child.
Where to find a Piano Teacher
Many local music stores will be happy to provide you with a list of teachers in your area that they have had a relationship with in the past. They can usually offer additional information on the teachers as well, such as methods used, whether they teach in a studio or your house, and what age group they specialize in.

Ask friends or family members if they have any experience with a local teacher. If they doesn't know anyone, the odds are good that one of their friends knows someone who plays well and can make a recommendation.
Choosing a Teacher
Once you have a list of potential teachers, start by determining what you are you looking for in a teacher.

- Is this for a child? If so, how old are they?
- What style of music do you want to learn? Classical, Jazz, Popular? Really good teachers will teach the basics but mix in a style that the student enjoys.
- How serious does the student want to be? Are they learning to be an expert pianist and compete in contests, to get a good introduction to music, or for fun.
Interview Potential Teachers
It's always important to conduct an interview with the potential teachers. There are several things that you want to find out at this stage:
- Is their personality a fit? It's extremely important to find a teacher that has a compatible personality, not only with the student but also the parent. If your personalities clash, move on.
- Where do the lessons take place? Do they have a studio, teach from their home, or travel to your house?
- How long are the lessons and how often do they take place? You know your child better than anyone. Is a 1 hour lesson more than their attention span can handle?
- How much do they charge? Do they charge by the lesson? The month? Keep in mind that the least expensive is not always the best. While you can sometimes find a bargain, you usually get what you pay for.
- Do they have recitals or participate in contests? It's important to know how often they have public recitals and performances and if it is required that the student participate.
- What are the expectations? Will you need special equipment or materials? How often do they expect your child to practice each day?

Schedule a Trial Lesson
Many teachers are more than willing to schedule an introductory or trial lesson so that you can gauge style and personality. Plan to attend so that you can see your child and the teacher interact. You can also inspect the studio or teaching environment.
Trust Your Judgment
At this point, you should have a pretty good feeling about the right choice. Be sure to trust your judgment and above all be supportive of your child. Rome wasn't built in a day and there will be ups and downs. Hang in there, it will get better soon!
