What is a reed?

A reed is a small, thin piece of cane that is used to create vibrations against woodwind mouthpieces. These vibrations actually create the tone of the instrument. Reeds come in many different styles and thicknesses to accomodate player preferences. Reeds can also be made out of synthetic materials.

In the case of clarinets and saxophones, the reed is what is known as a single reed (like the picture below). The oboe and bassoon however use a double reed, which is much smaller and actually two reeds tied together.

What does the number mean?

Reeds are numbered by tip thickness. The lower the number, the thinner the reed. As the read tip gets thicker the tone gets better, but requires a more mature embouchure to play.

How do I choose a reed?

For windwind players a reed can help create beautiful sounds or cause very annoying squeaks. Here are some suggestions to help you select a reed.

8th note. Check the Tip of the Reed

The tip is responsible for the vibration and is where the strength is measured. The thicker the tip, the more resistant the vibration and the better the tone. A thicker reed also requires a more developed embouchure to play. A larger number indicates a thicker tip. Just how hard or soft a reed you use is a matter of experimentation and personal preference. As a rule, softer reeds work better on mouthpieces with an open facing; harder reeds work better on mouthpieces with a more closed facing. Also make sure that there are no cracks or chips in the tip of the reed.

8th note. Check The Heart of the Reed

The heart is responsible for the tone color of the reed. The thicker the heart, the darker the tone. A thinner heart yields a brighter tone. To check the heart, hold the reed up to the light.

8th note. The Grade of the Cane

Better cane produces a purer tone and will increase the range of the instrument. It can also affect projection and the pitch of the instrument. The better the cane, the most consistent your sound will be.
