Caring for your Stringed Instrument

Parts of a stringed instrument.

Study the picture above to learn the different parts of your string instrument and bow.

Protect the instrument from extreme heat or cold. The finish and the wood can be easily damaged with quick changes in temperature.

When you finish playing or practicing, wipe off any rosin dust and fingerprints with a soft cloth. This keeps the instrument looking like new. If you get a build-up of rosin on the instrument, use Fiddlebrite or a Miracle Cloth to remove it.

Avoid touching the bow hair. The oils in your skin will keep the rosin from sticking to the bow hair.

Loosen the tension on the bow EVERY TIME you put the bow away. This will keep the bow from warping.

Put your instrument and bow back into to the case when you’re not playing. Most damage occurs when the instrument is left out of it’s case. If you must leave your instrument out of it’s case for short periods of time, use a stand. Keep loose objects out of the case as they could cause damage to the instrument.

It’s a good idea to bring your instrument to the repair shop at least once a year for inspection and routine maintenance. Sometimes we can spot minor problems early and head off expensive repairs. We’re always happy to inspect and test your instrument free of charge, and usually can do it while you wait. And if you have Amro’s Maintenance & Replacement coverage, any adjustments and repair it needs are free of charge. A properly working instrument can actually make you a better player.

Best of luck with your string instrument. Take good care of it, and don’t forget to practice!
