You can play...we guarantee it!

Adult Piano Classes at Amro Music (RMM)

If you have ever wanted to learn to play the piano or are wanting to revisit the piano, this is for you!  Amro's Recreational Music Making (RMM)  is a fun, no stress approach to learning the piano.

What is RMM and how is it different?

  • Lessons are in a group format with between five and eight students
  • Each lesson lasts an hour over an eight-week period
  • The purpose of RMM is the enjoyment and well-being of the player
  • It's about you-- not the quality of your playing

At the end of the eight weeks, you will be able to play...we guarantee it!  Upon completion of the  first eight weeks, you can progress even further by taking more advanced classes.

Classes are forming now.  To reserve your spot, call us at 901-323-8888 or send us an email.

Common Misconceptions and Questions

Am I too old to learn to the play the piano?

It's never too late and you are never too old to learn to play the piano.  RMM is specifically geared towards adults who want to learn how to play now and want to have fun doing it.

I'm just too busy to learn the piano!

There are classes that meet several days a week at various times to accommodate your busy schedule.  Classes are continually forming so you can have your pick.

Making music is for musicians and I am NOT musically inclined.

Our approach tears down the age-old idea that music is only for musicians.  Our philosophy with RMM is  that "making music is for everyone...regardless of musical background."

How are Amro's adult group piano lessons different than other programs in the area?

Amro Music is one of the six locations chosen nation-wide to be trained and certified in Recreational Music Making lessons. Our teachers attended an in-depth training seminar and are certified to teach this innovative approach at group piano lessons. Others in the area are not certified Recreational Music Making lessons teachers.

Frank's Lesson Blog #10: Wherein piano lessons feel like "30 Rock"

Maybe you had to be there.  I hope not, because that would mean I’m not much of a blogger.  But, you should have seen the looks on our faces.  Well, their faces anyway, because I couldn’t see my own face, but mine felt like theirs’ looked.  You see, Jason had just told us that we won’t always get to keep our right thumb on middle C.  I know we should have figured that out a long time ago, but … (let’s see, how, exactly, should I put this?), we hadn’t.   ...

Frank's Lesson Blog #9: Starting the second session of RMM

So much has happened in the three short weeks since my last blog, I hardly know where to begin.  Actually, I know exactly where to begin.  I GOT MY PIANO!  Sorry for the yelling, but the day after my last blog entry, I GOT MY PIANO that I rented from Amro.  Did I yell again?  I guess I can’t help it.  My new piano has been everything I hoped for, and more.  I play it nearly every day.  It just gets more fun every time I sit down and...

Frank's Lesson Blog #8

Do you ever make one decision that, then, makes another decision easy for you?  I did that Thursday night.  It was the last class for my adult beginners’ piano group at Amro.  Sitting there, loving every minute, I decided that I am going to sign up for the next set of classes.  That made another decision quite simple.  Friday morning, I woke up and realized that I need to have a piano in my home before that next set of lessons begins.  I chose the rental...

Frank's Lesson Blog #7

When I was a kid, I loved sports.  No matter the season, I was always on some kind of a team.  I’m not saying I was any good, but I really looked forward to the practices and the games.  When I had to miss one, I didn’t like it.  I used to get so excited that I even slept in my uniform a few times.  That was especially awkward during football season.   And downright dangerous that year when I played hockey.   I tell you this because I had to...

Frank's Lesson Blog #6

Alas, class was canceled on the 10th, but here is Frank's blog's triumphant return! Frank's Blog #6 I need some help from the sports fans in the group.  Do me a favor.  Hold up a finger like you’re at a ball game, signaling, “We’re Number 1.”  Or, better yet, go to the closet and get that big foam finger that you take to the games.  OK, you see which finger you or the foam guy is holding up?  Can we agree that’s the “number 1” finger?  Not on the piano,...

Frank's Lesson Blog #5

Progress.  Music to my ears.  Literally.  During last night’s lesson, for the first time, if I focused with all my might, I could think about what both hands were supposed to be doing.  I would study the piece for a few seconds before we started playing it and I would try to make a mental note of when I would have to make chord changes.  Success was fleeting.  It was fragile.  It disappeared as soon as I let myself realize that I had it.  But,...

Frank's Lesson Blog #4

I was on my way to my piano lesson tonight when I heard on the radio that a club was featuring “local musicians” this weekend.  I got to thinking, after 3 piano lessons (4 now), can I call myself a local musician?  Why not?  It’s not like you have to have a license or anything.  I should probably wait a couple of weeks, though, until I’m really good.   Speaking of which, a couple of my fellow students have pianos or keyboards in their homes and they’ve...

Frank's Lesson Blog #3

Some people might sign up for group piano lessons, at least in part, as a way to meet interesting people.  That would be a pretty good idea, really.  Not me, though.  I took this class for one simple reason: I have always wanted to play the piano.  The chance to meet people was the furthest thing from my mind.  For that matter, I am already blessed with so many engaging friends, co-workers, and family members, that I don’t have enough time to spend with all of them. ...

Frank's Lesson Blog #2

You know, there’s a lot being written these days about ways to stay mentally sharp as we grow older.  It turns out that exercises like counting backwards, and taking different routes to familiar places, can slow the mental aging process.  I guess that the idea is that, by introducing new mental and physical challenges, we keep the brain performing at its peak.  But what good is it to maintain a peak performing brain if we then waste our time counting backwards and...

Frank's Lesson Blog #1

I’ve said it many times: If I have one regret, it’s that I never learned to play the piano.  Then a sign in front of Amro Music made me realize what’s wrong with that statement.  The sign says that Amro guarantees that I (and, presumably, everyone else who sees the sign) can play the piano.  So, it’s not too late for me to learn to play.  Or, put another way, it’s too early for me to give up and say that I never learned to play.   Thursday night, I took my...

An Introduction to Frank's Excellent Blog Adventure

Welcome to Amro's new blog on adult piano lessons! For the next eight weeks, we'll be posting entries from a new student, Frank.  55 and a Memphis lawyer, Frank is in our Thursday night class and we're delighted to get a beginning student's perspective.  We hope you'll be excited, too, and keep watching for his entries.  Please share any thoughts or questions you have!
